 Kho Lanta
Kho Lanta

This island forms the most southern district of Krabi province. It was known long ago by its name in the Malay language, Pulao Satak, which means Long Beach Island. Later, so many Thais, both Buddhist and Muslim, came to live on the island that there seemed to be a million eyes, which is what some people think Lanta means in Thai. Others hold that the name is corrupted from Javanese "lan-tas", and means a fish grill (which is built of wood with a square grill on top where the fish are set in a circle). Several islands are in the National Park:
Kho Lanta is located approximately 70 kilometres south of Krabi on the east side of Southern Thailand's Phang Nga Bay. It stretches for 27 kilometres in the north-south direction and is traversed by a mountain range that is still covered by virgin rain forest. The range reaches heights of 500 metres in its northern and southern parts. The water off the west coast is crystal clear and the beaches powdery white.
Traveling in Thailand is easy and public transport is generally on time. Countless little traveling agencies, close to traveling junctions like railway stations or airports as well as nearby hotels, are good addresses to get information or to buy a ticket.
Knowledge of English is widely spread. Please inform yourself, about the habits of your host land before traveling. Especially the customs of the Moslem and Buddhist section of population; and behave accordingly. You can travel to the south of Thailand from Bangkok by airplane, train or bus
In the time between November to April you can use the express boat for most of the stretches. You can book the tickets for the tour in a local traveling agency, which usually also takes care of the transfer to the boats. When arriving Kho Lanta you will be picked up from your booked hotel or resort, or you get the possibility to book something right there.

Due to the weather the boat transport will be stopped from Mai to October. The whole year through you get the possibility to travel within Thailand with public transport. If you have some time, which you should have if you’ve traveled that far.
Kho Lanta Kho Lanta consists of two adjacent islands: Kho Lanta Yai and Kho Lanta Noi.
Kho Lanta Yai is full of tourist facilities while Kho Lanta Noi is the location of the district office. Most of the beaches on Kho Lanta Yai lie in the west and offer a wide range of accommodation. These beaches include Kho Kwang, Khlong Dao, Phra Ae, Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang, all can be reached by road.
Sala Dan Pier in the north is where tour operators, shops and banks are situated.  At the south end of the island is the headquarters of Mu Kho Lanta National Park which offer a camping ground and beautiful views.  Travelling to the east of the island, visitors can see an old community of Kho Lanta and a sea gypsy village. Some guesthouses are available.  Motorbikes can be rented at Sala Dan to explore the island.  The peak season lasts from November to April. Source: www.sawadee.com
